Vegetarians
A vegetarian diet can sometimes prevent the correct nutrients intake, but a well thought out vegetarian diet offers healthier living than meat eaters. An educated diet of vegetables can bring all the correct vitamins, protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Proteins and fats are important and are usually missed factors when a few vegetarians plan their intake. Teenage vegetarians are often the most affected as they miss vital nutrients are essential for growth, but also adults can suffer.
What do vegetarians generally eat?
There is a mixed variety of food; some vegetarians even eat many seafood types not including fish into their list of meats to be avoided.
The most popular food groups are of course vegetables and fruits. Almost anything that isn’t meat. Cheese and milk are popular, but some vegetarian types will not include anything that is a produce of meat products.
Types of vegetarians
There are a variety of vegetarians or eating various menus that exclude or include certain foods.
• Part vegetarians
A diet that does not allow the intake of red meat as the only restriction. This is the softest former vegetarians and generally the diet includes all the correct nutrients.
• Pesco Vegetarians
This diet includes fish combined with fruit, vegetables, nuts and grain.
• Ovo Vegerian
Eggs are included with grain, fruit and vegetables plus nuts.
• Vegans
This is probably the strictest of all the vegetarian types. This is a tough diet to get the correct nutrients owing to its slim selection of food choice. No meats, no dairy products and no eggs are just the few examples. Anything deriving from animals has been struck off the menu. Only fruits, nuts, vegetables and grain are aloowed.
• Lacto vegetarian
These vegetarians do not include eggs in their diet. Other dairy products such as milk and cheese are part of this vegetarian type as well as vegetables, grains, nuts, and fruit.
Interesting Vegetarian Information
Regions include some places in India where food is strictly vegetarian, and many South East Asian countries that also have vegetarian diets. In Thailand there is a festival each year dedicated to vegetarians aptly named the Vegetarian Food Festival which derived from Chinese influences. China also holds similar events where whole markets offer vegetarian only dishes.
Religion in many countries where meat cannot be consumed as part of the sacred rules is another reason why vegetarian dishes have become so common and popular globally. People these days like to try alternative cuisines to their local dishes.
The price of meat can deter people from including meat into their diet meaning they forcibly become vegetarians due to the economics’. Vegetables are easily grown in some regions. Occasionally the cost effectiveness of growing your own vegetables and being practically self-sufficient is attractive to some families in any society as a reason to grow their own vegetables and become vegetarian.
The only downside to being vegetarian is if the diet is not taken into consideration replacing nutrients lost through not eating meat. The most vulnerable groups are teenagers where nutrients are important at this vital time period of their lives to help them grow healthy bones and strong immune systems. If vegetarians take these factors into account by adding foods that supplement this disadvantage in the correct amount generally a vegetarian will be healthier than most non-vegetarians.
